Fun Facts

  • I originally planned to have Frisker's eyes glow red in comic #4. I felt that they looked too evil and decided to go with white eyes to make them more friendly and more visible to readers.

  • In comic #7 when Friskers gets enraged, the fur on his back puffs up. In real life, rats arch their backs and puff up their fur to look bigger when they're stressed, angry, or showing aggression towards other rats. Since Friskers doesn't have a spine, he can't arch his back.

  • Mr. Friskers first started out as a made-up character during an improv class I took a few years ago at Second City in Chicago. In one game, my classmates and I played a scene in which we were working in a mine. On the spot, I decided to add a pet rat named Mr. Friskers for my character. Everyone loved Mr. Friskers so much that I decided to keep him.

Character Bio

Mr. Friskers, or simply Friskers whom he prefers to be called is a mischievous yet kind-hearted Brown Rat who got kicked out of his family's nest after his body mysteriously transformed into a ball-like shape one day. After a few days of searching for a new home, Friskers found an abandoned tool shed on Farmer John's property and moved in.

Since he lives by himself and is exiled from his family's nest, he frequently seeks attention by hanging out with Piggy Oink and his friends as a coping strategy for loneliness. Friskers' attention-seeking behavior can drive Piggy oink and his friends crazy sometimes and they beg Friskers to leave them alone. Whenever this happens, Friskers responds by plotting elaborate pranks on them for the attention he seeks.

Friskers struggles with hoarding and has stuffed the tool shed full of objects that he claims are shiny or interesting to look at. He also hoards food in a burrow underneath the tool shed that mostly contains seeds and nuts.

Because rats have been pests to Farmers for ages, Farmer John dislikes Friskers, and for a good reason. Friskers likes to cause mischief at the farm by stealing food from John's kitchen including corn and soybeans from the volunteer crop field. Since Farmer John prefers to deal with pests humanely and knows that Friskers is sentient like Piggy Oink and his friends, he plans to catch Friskers unharmed and release him several miles away from his dairy farm.
